Have your children learned to read and write in the second language, or if they are younger, do you expect that they will learn to read and write?
If so, how will they/did they learn this?
We have never tried, but we expect he will continue to slowly learn on his own, especially during our annual visits to Venezuela and other Spanish-speaking countries.
— Father of bilingual 11-year old (Spanish)
They have not and likely will not. It is a lot of work to read/write Japanese. We will not make them but
if they are interested, we will support them. It is difficult to force them
to learn hundreds of characters and impossible to remember if they do not
use it regularly.
— Parents of bilingual 11-year old and 7-year old (Japanese)
If you read/write English, it's easy to learn how to write/read in Italian because they use the same alphabet. I plan to have them spend one year in an Italian school. I don't know about Farsi.
— Father of trilingual 8-year old and 3-year old (Italian & Farsi)
I expect they will learn to read and write. They will learn from me,
plus they'll probably go to Portuguese school of some type.
— Father of bilingual 2 1/2-year old twins (Portuguese)
He will learn to read and write in Spanish because we
are going to teach him at home. We use books, songs
and videos but mainly we talk to him in Spanish.
— Mother of bilingual 3-year old (Spanish)
I really hope that we'll get to see my family often enough so that
my daughter realizes that she "needs" both languages.
— Mother of bilingual 1-year old (French)
Yes. I suspect that it will be a combination of me teaching them, taking French classes here in the US and frequent visits to France. I also hope to spend 2 years living in France at some point in the future and will hopefully be able to enroll them in French schools.
